I was also on the advance party at Gyp, but I'm sorry that I don't remember your name. I got there late one night in March 1963 as an LAC Comm Tech. There was nobody in the guard house, but did see some lights on in what turned out to be the combined mess. There was a fellow there which I guess was the Orderly Corporal, because nobody wore their uniforms for the first month or so. He told me to find an empty room across the road in the barracks and I would have to make my bed. I said no problem, as I always had to do that, but he said I didn't understand. I would have to assemble my bed, because the springs were in one room, the frames in another, and the matresses somewhere else. In any event, it made for an interesting arrival at a new posting. I was there until September 1964 and worked out at the GATR Site.
After attending the FAAR in Ottawa we drove to Senneterre and revisited the base and met with the Historical Society. They have put together some info about the Airforce presence in their community. We had a great visit with the towns people and went to the base. The base was sold to the town for $1.00. The PMQ's are now occupied by the local population. The admin, mess, womens quarters and mens quarters are still there albeit in poor repair. The main tower is demolished. I would recommend a visit to that community. We stayed at the BellVista motel and found it an excellent facility.
Just discovered that the pinetreeline web site is active again. Am so glad to see this. Spent some of the best years of my life in the Air Force. Also met and married my husband while stationed in Metz France.
Drove by St Margarets (now James Park) yesterday on my way to the Moncton airport. The old RCAF Base looks like a nice/clean small community. The Jack Hackett store across the base looks abandoned. I still have good memories from the 58-60 era
Hi all, just a note for anyone who remembers me, Gyp 1973-67, was there when it opened, was an RM Tech at the time, got my hooks there and also Sgt hooks, ended up in Halifax as a WO attached to the navy, they were going to send me to sea and I said ADIOS. Take care all and enjoy life, it's really toooooo short.
